Unilever - Wall's , Shanghai
In 1992, Unilever-Wall's opened an ice cream factory in Beijing. A basic warehouse was used for storage, utilising a drive-in racking system. After several years of growth, it was considered necessary to expand into other parts of China.

Problem:
It was necessary to establish a bridgehead in Shanghai prior to commencing production there.

Requirements:
Phase one: Build new cold store in Shanghai to act as distribution centre.
Phase two: Build processing plant and expand cold store to cope with increased capacity.
Problems:
2000 pallets to be stored. Initially 50 product lines. Future upgrade to 300 product lines in the same store. Limited space for storage. Minimum investment cost per pallet stored.
Phase 1 was completed in January 1995

Phase 2 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
As Phase 1, but with HIGHER VOLUME and HIGHER THROUGHPUT

Operator efficiency and throughput needed improvement at -30 °C
ACHIEVED by introducing REMOTE CONTROL of Mobile Bases from Fork Lift Trucks with HEATED CABS
