Racking Systems - Exploring the Commonly Used Terms in Racking Systems

Racking systems, in their various guises, have revolutionised modern warehouses by creating additional storage space and streamlining operations. Racking systems are often quite complex but there are a number of commonly used phrases.

Racking systems are available in many different forms and can be carefully crafted to fit in with your own company’s unique work and warehouse environment. There are obviously a great many varying type of logistics and delivery companies and each will store different types of products in their warehouses. As such, it is important to put due consideration into your choice of racking systems for your company to ensure that you get the one that will dovetail most effectively with your day to day business operations. Getting to grips with what sort of racking systems are right for you and how best to utilise them can often be garnered by looking at some of the terms that are frequently associated with racking systems as this will allow you to establish which aspects of racking systems are most applicable to the conditions in your own particular warehouse set-up.

Racking Systems – From Bays to Shimms

Knowing the terminology when it comes to racking systems is always a good idea for warehouse operators as it will allow for the proficient use of their racking systems and ensure that they are performing at an optimum level. Just some of the most commonly used terms pertaining to racking systems include:

  • Bay – So far as racking systems are concerned, a bay refers to dual frames and at least level of beams. The size and layout of bays in a warehouse will have a bearing on the choice of racking systems to implement.
  • Beams – These obviously provide the support on which racking systems operate and on which produce can be placed. The length of beams found on racking systems can vary dramatically depending on the type of system that you opt for but, generally speaking, most racking systems will have beams between 1m and 4m in length.
  • Drive In Racking Systems – For these types of racking systems, there is no aisle as such. Access to the palettes is achieved by driving into the racking systems themselves and unloading or uploading the palettes.
  • Narrow Aisle Racking Systems – These racking systems allow for aisles to be placed closer together which means that more products can be stored within the warehouse environment. Narrow aisle racking systems are probably the best choice for warehouses where space economy is the most important factor.
